Dieting is something a lot of people get caught up in when they try to lose weight without giving much thought to the whys and wherefores of what they’re doing and without any consideration about what else they might reasonably do to improve their chances of not only losing that weight but also improving their fitness levels so that once they have lost it they will keep it off long term. While the glaringly obvious extra “thing” is getting some exercise, most people shun this like it will be something that is really hard to do.

So what can people do to improve their diet’s chances of helping them lose that weight without complicating the whole issue?

Start by making sure that the diet you are on is as simple as it can be without being too basic and missing important factors such as correct nutritional balance and portion control as well as calorie count. Then introduce some form of daily exercise plan to boost the body’s ability to maximize the diet’s effectiveness. That’s because its not much good just eating less and hoping to shed several pounds in a week or two. It just doesn’t happen that way!

You really have to get involved with our own health to really make a difference in your body weight and shape. After all, when you think about losing weight, you’re really thinking about slipping your body into a smaller size set of clothes and looking great in beachwear, aren’t you?

Well if you really want that result, its not just “weight” that you have to lose. merely losing weight can result in a fat, flabby body becoming a slightly thinner flabby body, sometimes with odd bulges of fat where the body has depleted its store of fat unevenly around the body. Without any exercise, the muscles will also have been further wasted and reduced in strength so they will be unable to hold the body in the nice, toned and good looking shape that you were aiming for.

The only way to remedy this situation is with exercise. And not just one form of exercise, but adopting several disciplines so that all of the body’s muscles are worked fairly evenly for an all over better tone and figure. This will means doing more walking, maybe some running, some swimming (which is one of the best all over exercises you can get), some aerobic exercise which can be obtained either in classes or at home (or in the gym) on apparatus such as steppers, elliptical machines etc, skipping, running on the spot and even the old favorites such as sit-ups, press-ups etc.

The idea is that you do not have to make the exercises difficult or over bearing, just keep to the simple ones that you enjoy and do enough each day to get your breathing and heart rate up and make you feel out of breath and like you have done something worthwhile! This is the best way to lose weight.

Then your diet will do its best work by providing everything your body needs to stay healthy while the exercise ensures you use up more energy than you are consuming so you use up the spare fat while also building muscle strength and tone for that great looking figure that WILL look great in those new clothes and beach wear!

There is plenty of controversy about what constitutes a healthy diet for losing weight and maintaining good health and what does not. Many people say that a diet made up of processed foods that you get with most diet food delivery companies may be okay for losing weight but does nothing for your overall health and well being because there are too many additives and salt in the food. Others disagree and think that these foods are perfectly okay. Who is right and who is wrong?

The problem is that there is really no hard and fast right or wrong answer, only degrees of rightness or wrongness depending upon the individual needs of the person. While it may be true that artificial additives of any kind in food constitutes a health hazard of some degree, the kind of additives used in processed foods are passed by government food agencies in different countries, so they must adhere to their guidelines for safety.

But for purists who prefer the idea of real food being the only way to really be sure of eating healthily, here is something that may open up some thought provoking discussion.

The only real way to ensure the food that you eat is completely free of any additives, pesticide and herbicide residues, chemicals and pharmaceuticals is to rear your own meat and grow your own fruit and vegetables on land that is certified for organic use. That is the only way you can be truly certain that there is nothing added, because you are the only one who can add or not add these things to it.

Even certified organic farms are permitted the use of several biodegradable pesticides that are believed not to infiltrate the cell structure of plants. Sure they are organic and free from the incredible cocktail of chemical poisons that larger industrial farms use on their crops to maximize yields and minimize pests, but they can still put some on them to keep the worst of the bugs away. They may rear their chickens, pigs and cows in open pasture, but they are still allowed to give them antibiotics to fend off illness. The sentiment may be in the right place, but organic farms also need to turn a profit and if their yields are below a certain level, they will go out of business.

So if you really and truly want real food without anything added or taken away, then you have no choice but to grow your own and make sure the soil on your land has not been sprayed with anything, like ever!

So you decided that you want to lose weight and started looking at different types of diet to help you get started. You were expecting to find a few popular diets that you could take your pick from and it would be really easy. But you found yourself faced with hundreds of different diets, brands, companies and all sorts of advice and tips on what the best way to go would be. How are you going to sort through that tangle of information and find what you need?

The Internet is a tad overloaded with diet information, that much is true and a lot of it comes from companies and their salespeople, or affiliates trying to get you to sign up with their particular flavor of weight loss diet. There is even something called diet food delivery that promises to package up your entire dietary needs for a set period of time and deliver the whole thing to your home!

Hey, wait a minute… That actually sounds like a good idea, seen as you spend most of your time working and have very little free time to yoruself, right? So what is this all about?

When you order a home delivered variety of diet that does everything for you, you are paying for a service that takes most of the hard work out of trying to lose weight through the food you eat, but it comes at a greater price than just what is taken off your credit card. You have to eat food that is processed and pre-packaged with a long shelf life so it doesn’t spoil before you get around to eating it and some of these diets can last a month or so! That means the quality of that food is not going to be even close to being on par with what your mother used to make (or maybe still does).

If you are okay with eating that kind of food and it doesn’t bother you so much, then get out your credit card and let Nutrisystem or other company help you lose weight the easiest way there is. If not, you better re-think your weight loss plans because you will not enjoy the food if you are used to really good food and then you’ll just end up complaining that yo hated it and spoil it for anyone else who actually wouldn’t mind the food. You only have to read all the mindless complaints on somewhere like Amazon to see who bought food they weren’t prepared for! Good luck with your eventual choice on losing weight through what you eat.

Out of all the crazy diets you could try for losing weight, the Mediterranean is probably one of the best ones. Not only is it very simple to adhere to, it’s also tasty and doesn’t involve deleting whole food groups from your diet. You can even drink some wine in moderation.

Not only is it effective in helping you lose weight, it’s also believed to be very healthy and perhaps the healthiest diet you can adopt. In addition to losing weight, you’ll also be able to fight off heart disease and high blood pressure. So is it really that good and will you find it effective?

Fist of all, the basis of the diet is fruit and vegetables and many of the recipes available are actually vegetarian. However Mediterraneans are also great lovers of fresh oily fish as well as a small amount of chicken.

You don’t have to be a nutritional expert to agree that this is one very healthy diet choice as you will be eating a lot of fruit and vegetables. The only thing is that warmer climates have more fruit and vegetables growing throughout the year which isn’t always the case in colder climates. In the winter you might not feel like eating so many fruits and vegetables.

Another thing that you will be including a large amount of in your diet is olive oil. It’s considered to be the major source of phenolic compounds which can help you to reduce your chances of getting cancer and can also keep your cholesterol levels under control.

However what you need to understand is that olive oil isn’t the only source of these compounds. They can also be found in red grapes, prunes, currants, apple juice, berries and tomatoes. Another thing is that we often think about the health benefits of a glass of red wine per night. However if you drink red grape juice you’ll also get the benefits.

Another thing about this diet is that it can take quite a while to prepare your meals as you’re expected to cook everything freshly. You might simply not have the time. Generally in Northern Europe and North America, people don’t have as many hours to spend in the kitchen. This is because people in the Mediterranean usually work fewer hours.

You should also think about your approach to eating compared to those living in Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Italy. In general people have much longer lunch breaks which means they can take their time eating. You won’t find them “grabbing a sandwich” while trying to do a plethora of other tasks

A lot of the reason those in the Mediterranean are healthier and live longer is because of the climate. When it’s warmer you simply feel better – both physically and mentally. Those in colder countries can end up feeling depressed because of the lack of sunshine and even develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

So although the Mediterranean diet is an excellent choice if you‘re looking to burn fat, you have to be realistic about what you can achieve. Just try to add in healthier foods and test out some of the recipes – they can be truly delicious. Jamie Oliver has many tasty dishes you can try.
