Total Gym is a universal fitness equipment meant for total body workout, which justifies its name. The Total Gym machine can be used as an all-around body workout or only for your upper, middle or lower body. The idea behind Total Gym is using real weight (body weight) rather than bands or rods for resistance. Another selling point is its versatility. A variety of exercises and possibilities seem to be limitless, although some users complain about lack of resistance and effectiveness of some exercises.

Total Gym comes with a set of DVD’s and exercise cards, that also include routines. depending on the model it includes a variety of accessories, such as wing attachment, leg pull accessory, ribbed squat stand, some of which, such as stationary pedal and press bar are sold separately. Total gym has also a home and a clinical model. The latter can be used by fitness professionals, such as personal trainers, to train their clients. The price is steep but checking it on Amazon.com regularly may pay off, as they have great offers for this equipment time to time.

Pros:

  • 400 lb weight capacity for total strength and stability.
  • The endless possibilities make it very versatile and keep workouts fresh.
  • Does not take up much space and can be folded to store (although it can be a bit cumbersome for one person).
  • Easy to assembly, no tools required.
  • Adjustable for different fitness levels.

Cons:

  • Well made but a bit pricey in comparison to other brands.
  • Not enough resistance for some users.
  • Foot plate is too small and too low in a home model (just right in a clinical model).

The Bottom Line:

The Total Gym equipment does have limitations and probably not for someone into serious body building, but it works well for toning the whole body, if used on regular basis. As with any other fitness equipment Total Gym is only as good as the person using it.
